About Us
The I.P.O.H. Project is an aptly coined acronym for the Ipoh Preservation of Heritage Project. This project is initiated by a group of diverse researchers from both tourism and business marketing backgrounds. The team members comprise of Dr. Teh Pek Yen, Dr Teoh Chai Wen, Assoc. Prof. Dr Derek Ong and Assoc. Prof. Dr Daniel Chong. They believe that active engagement with the community in research can bring more impact, substance and benefit within the 21st century through nostalgic reinterpretation of archiving craftmanship which has been part of Ipoh’s heritage and culture.
The idea was conceived by Dr Teh, who as an Ipoh lass herself, observed how unsustainable tourism development in Ipoh emphasized too much on the gastronomical development but ignored the other precious treasures of Ipoh that are facing near extinction.
The project is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aims to document stories, knowledge and values for future generations. The project seeks to immortalize the craft masters as the heroes and caretakers of Ipoh’s proud heritage in hopes to spark a reimagination of interest to continue their legacy in Malaysia.
